Welcome to the Otterburn Ranges.
This MOD training area has some of the most breathtaking views in the Northumberland National Park. You are welcome to explore the estate though areas may be closed for military training.
Our map explains where you may go. If red flags are flying the Controlled Access Area will be closed to visitors. When you don’t see red flags, feel welcome to travel on some of the most remote roads in the country. Click on 'firing times' to check when you can visit or if in any doubt phone 01830 520569.
Military training
Otterburn is the second largest live firing range in the country and has been used for military training since 1911. It covers over 90 square miles.
With a wide variety of terrain and the farms on the ranges with their buildings, fields and livestock it provides a realistic environment for British and NATO soldiers to train here each year with the latest infantry weapons, artillery and helicopters.
It also preserves one of England’s remotest upland areas for you to explore. A land rich in history, folklore, landscape and wildlife.
There are two zones here:
Open Access Area (marked cream on the map) is open all round.
Controlled Access (marked mauve on the map) is used for live firing. When it is being used for training red flags are flown to show that it is closed to visitors. When no red flags are flying, visitors must keep to the roads or way-marked paths.
