Landscape

The Ranges are some of the most unspoilt areas in the Northumberland National Park and lie between the valley of the River Rede and the Border Ridge. The landscape falls into the following areas.

The Cheviots

High conical hills and the Border Ridge. Mixed acid grassland and bracken on the lower slopes with heather/cotton grass on highest elevations with a strong feeling of remoteness.

Coquet Valley

The deep winding valley of the River Coquet with its tributaries, principally the Usway, Rowhope and Ridlees Burns.

Cottonshope Valley

A wide and deep valley with mainly mixed acid grassland.

Moorland Plateau

Upland plateau and gently rolling hills.

Redesdale

A broad river valley with mainly enclosed and rough pasture land with conifer and broadleaved woodlands, including the extensive area of Stewartshiels.

Grasslees Valley

A wide valley cutting through the Carboniferous Fell Sandstone. It is heavily wooded with a predominance of broadleaf species.

Sandstone Hills

The Fell Sandstone landscape is dominated by Harbottle Crags and Simonside Ridge. It has extensive heather cover and mixed conifer plantations.
